Finding the Best Health Insurance for Pregnant Women

If you are pregnant as we speak, it can be difficult to find health insurance for pregnant women. It is good to know that insurance companies are forbidden by the federal law to deny your request for insurance while you are pregnant on the grounds of a pre-existing condition. Unfortunately, the law is only applicable in case you are part of a group health insurance plan. The law is helpful for you if you are pregnant and you have to change from one group plan to another. This usually happens if you go from one job to another or if you quit working and your husband has to include you in his health plan. The insurance company that is offering the new plan can’t refuse to cover for your medical expenses during pregnancy.

Things are much worse if you get pregnant and you don’t have any health insurance for pregnant women. There are many women who choose not to buy health insurance for them because they want to save some money. However, this is not possible anymore once you plan to become a mother because heath care during pregnancy is essential both for you and for your baby. Not getting adequate medical care while you carry a baby might have very unpleasant consequences and might prevent the baby from developing normally and healthy. However, if you are already pregnant and uninsured, it will be almost impossible to find health insurance for pregnant women in this position. You can check if your income allows you to qualify for governmental programs that offer medical care. If you don’t qualify, you have to pay for this out of your pocket. Since it is going to be expensive, it is best to buy an adequate health insurance for pregnant women policy before you actually get pregnant.

Insurance companies usually make you wait for a period of time before they start paying benefits on maternity coverage. This is why it is not recommended to switch to your husband’s plan or to change your job during pregnancy. You might not afford the waiting period if you are in the last stage of your pregnancy or if you give birth in that time. If you have no choice, then COBRA might be of help to you. This allows you to remain included in the group plan of your former employer for a certain amount of time. This might be enough to provide coverage until your new plan starts paying benefits. Nevertheless, you have to pay for the premiums and they might be high. Read the full story

The Affordable Care Act has been implemented, not just to control skyrocketing health care costs, but to attempt to improve the quality of health care also. Reforms under the Affordable Care Act have stopped some of the worst abuses by the health insurance industry and have given Americans new rights and benefits. Already more children get health coverage, the lifetime and annual limits on care have ended, and those under the age of 26 can remain covered by the parents’ health insurance.

There’s still a long way to go for these very necessary changes, but right now, people still have to go through the hassle of finding health coverage appropriate for their own needs and the biggest question for an average family is cost. If there are pre-existing conditions for any of the family member, insurance can be denied, although there is a move to stop that practice by 2014.

Finding health insurance today may often start by looking at insurance reviews online, and the best way to do this is to narrow it down by looking at reviews for your state – otherwise it is even more confusing. It is essential to have some form of medical insurance – over 60% of bankruptcies in this country are due to people being unable to pay medical bills. Read the full story
